In this piece, Heymann states that "more and more indies are giving up on SACD." True.
More worrisome - there might not be a future for classical releases. Heymann says a label must sell 20,000 units to cover the cost of recording a (full) orchestra. No-one is doing that these days. Is anyone worried ?
Well, personally I am not too worried. As long as classical music gets recorded I don't care who distributes it.
I personally wouldnt give a damn if all classical music (and jazz) ceased to exist...and the uppity wankers(especially the reviewer types who use all sorts of bullshit flowery jargon to describe them...vomit inducing.
actually, I am ok with contemporary (like Part, etc) but who needs another damn Bach or Beethoven piece? Jesus..
I abandoned classical long ago(and could never stand jazz)
Although I do still sing classical rep if they pay me well enough.

While that is true, the indies are the only ones still doing SACD! The majors bailed out early.
Here's a thought - why not record at a music school ? The music is great..and it would be free of charge !!
What I don't understand is why 24/96 would not be good enough for Naxos vs SACD. I love the SACD format, but if it is not commercially viable what is the point? Boutique? 24/96 and 24/192 are easily recordable mediums even by poor schmoes like me. Better converters, better mic pres, and better mics will = better sound for sure.
Until someone makes commercially available 2496 pcm files available for play on any DVD player, since most living, breathing humans have some sort of DVD player (good or bad) at least the market is not making them buy hardware for playback.
The reality with 2496 dvds is that they can be made in runs of 1,000 whether it be with Discmaker in NJ or with AMG here in Atlanta. Short runs are their specialty.
Sometimes the fight has to be given up when the business model is not working. Even Sony's new $400 SACD player is not going to move the masses to SACD. Even $200 players couldn't do it. Needing a dedicated player has killed DVD-A and SACD as mass market music sources. We love it, most could care less.
I am a big fan of Naxos and will continue to be a customer regardless of their format offerings. I greatly appreciate all they have tried to do in the market.
Bingo !! I stated this (exact) point a year ago - in the "Digital" forum, "Fall of SACD" thread.
Labels *could have* put out data-discs a long time ago. Why didn't they ?
