Even as a classical musician I have always wanted to play pedal steel and dobro. Played well both of these instruments are incredible.

Amazing variety of music posted here by you and others.

Wow.

I love An American Prayer, and I share many favorites with ncdrawl. (Extremely disturbing, I know.)

Five other random all-time favorites:
Miles Davis: In A Silent Way
John Fahey: America
Erik Satie's Gnossiennes and Gymnopedies
Sonny Sharrock: Ask The Ages
Smog: A River Ain't Too Much to Love

Ah, so much good music in the world. LOVE IT!

Don't worry Stephen, I share things with NC too: I walk on all fours and love bananas

P.S. Satie's gnosseries and gymnopedes is great! How about Gounod's "Messe solennelle de Sainte C

I agree, pedal steel is one of the few instruments that can really cut down deep in my soul..even when played alone. I am a classical musician too(Singer) but my love for the Pedal steel and "High Lonesome Music" runs deep. I will say this.. the steel guitar is incredibly difficult to master, heck, to even get the rudiments down takes an incredible bit of intestinal fortitude. Ive been playing for a good while now and am still a hack.

my baby is identical to this one

but (3+4) rather than the configuration shown

and my lap steel is a rickenbacker electro from 1964, just like below, only not as shiny. (mine has been played heavily)

Pedal steel is one of those magical instruments that transcends genre.

Fascinating how the "crying" sound of pedal steel, and much of the singing, makes American country music remarkably portable. Other cultures respond to it, even without understanding the words. There is something about the sounds that resonates.
