Yeah- that would suck to loose that- but someone must have the source files somewhere right? Always get a back-up onto tape or a archive hard drive! Or better yet, have the studio keep one for you.

we did it in AIFF format. The original CD is long gone

AIFF is a lossless format, identical to Wave. So unless you converted to a lossy format, then back to AIFF, you're okay. That is, ripping from an audio CD to AIFF is not lossy.

What is the difference between Apple Lossless and AIFF then?

AIFF is a non-compressed, lossless format for storing and playing PCM audio files. It is similar to a WAV file in that it is a full resolution, uncompressed file.

Apple Lossless is a compressed, lossless format. All the information is there, but the information is compressed upon being written to disc and uncompressed when read for playback. Apple Lossless takes less space to store on disc than AIFF.

They sound the same when played back.

(There is a compressed version of AIFF but it hasn't been used for a long time since MP3 is such a better compression format. I doubt iTunes can even generate a compressed AIF file, but I am not an iTunes user.)

Bottom line: I bet your the copy you have of your recording is a wonderful sounding full resolution file!
