The Audio-Technica PEQ-3 is on sale right now for $44, list price is $119.
"...a little plug'n'play box with a wall-wart power supply that's quiet, sounds clean and surprisingly dynamic, and gets the job done remarkably well." Stereophile, Analog Corner, December 2009
If you are going to pay $150 for the ones you mention you might as well get a dramatic improvement by spending $100 more on a Bellari VP130.
well kinda stretching my budget to get to $150 tbh
The AT PEQ3 ought to be perfect then; save $100 instead spending $100 more.
ah well. i got antsy and actually bought one over lunch before your last post...
i'm lucky enough to live in mpls, so i can actually go to the storefront HQ of needle doctor and the guy there definitely preferred the musical fidelity to the pro-ject...
hope it's not a big blunder but from what i've read it should be at least solid...
I think I have a phono amp that came with my HK amplifier. I think it is inside the box.
I have the Cambridge Audio 640P that I use with my Ortofon OM20 and I think they work well together. I guess my thought is what is wrong with the 540P? Is the problem with the 540P or the wall wart power supply? Unless you were unhappy with the 540P I think it would be a good budget choice with your Ortofon. I have not heard the Musical Fidelity or a recent Pro-Ject Phono Box so I can not speak for them. If all you need is a new power supply I think that would be far cheaper than a new phono pre-amp.
oh yeah i should have said, the 540p isn't working...i took it to a local place - hi-fi sound - that actually still does repairs, the dude there is a real "old pro" and he checked the power supply and anything he thought would obvious or cheap to fix...since it wasn't any of that, he would have had to dig into it and he basically said, "look i charge $90 an hour for repairs and this thing costs $90 new so i don't think it's worth it"
i was happy with it but it broke after a year so i guess i just felt a little burned on by that cuz i've only had it for about a year and a half
well, i guess i will find out tonight, hopefully this will sound fine...
shopping for audio makes my head hurt frankly : )
but thx this forum has always been very helpful to me.
If It were me, I would get the soundsmith phono preamp.

well so far so good...hooked up the VPLS this weekend and i think it sounds pretty good! it's hard to tell the difference between this and the last one because i also replaced by cartridge so who knows what's making what sound different.
and i guess to be honest i don't know if my ears are good enough to really detect all the difference that a lot of audiophiles do..but records are enjoyable sounding to me on my system, so i guess that's good enough...
