Music Festival

Went to Virgin Mobile music festival in Balto.. 2 days of varied bands. From Dylan to Nine Inch Nails, Andrew Bird to Kanye West, She & Him to Armin Van Buurin. Many highlights (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Offspring, Chuck Berry, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings) and lowlights (Dylan, Lil' Wayne, Jack Johnson).

Most committed performance: Iggy and the Stooges.
Best pleasant surprise: #1 Chuck Berry, he didn't just phone it in. #2 BRMC, they f'in rocked!
Best violin/whistling combination: Andrew Bird.
Best violin/triangle solo/combination: Foo Fighters.
Best unexpectedly good transference of recorded work to live big crowd context: Cat Power.
Best unamplified performance: Swell Season (off the stage into the crowd).
Best performance that was exciting but I still don't love the band: Foo Fighters.

Overall sound: pretty good for a big outdoor event. Bass was as huge and impactful as anyone wants from slammin live events. mids/highs met pro sound standards - that is, not great, but livable, and better than many other big events. Voice clarity/intelligibility was VERY good, much better than average. In any case, it's LIVE, and immediate and exciting.
Good sound in the dj/dance/techno/etc tent too, considering. Plenty of volume and slam. Must have a whole lot of "teh WATTS".
Best exposed feminine flesh: friggin' EVERYWHERE, lawd ha mercy, wow. God bless summer.

Sounds killer. I'm glad Cat Power was good, but I'm sorry to hear that Dylan and Jack Johnson didn't do it for you. It looks like you have the same opinion of Foo Fighters that I do - every now and then, I enjoy a listen, but I can't bring myself to say that I like them. I don't know - maybe it's because I always thought Grohl was a goober, even before he started his own thing.

Wish I could have been there.

Re: Music Festival

Grohl is a rocker and a good front man. His commitment to bringin music to the people can't be faulted and he's a got a sense of humor that many performers lack. He's such a good drummer too - almost too bad that he has expert Taylor Hawkins in the band. But like you I just don't dig their music all that much - just a little too simplistic and chorus-y.
But he was the drummer for Nirvana and that I will always appreciate.

Jack Johnson was a big snore.

I'm a Dylan fan but was disappointed in his set. The band was highly skilled, and capable of way more than the plodding country rock accompaniment that they applied to every dam* song. Intelligibility of the lyrics was a problem. So for me the music was pedestrian; the magical lyrics were hard to get; the musical re-castings of familiar songs were not improvements over the old versions....Of course some people dug his show and maybe I missed out. I left after a while to the other stage to see NIN. They played very well and effectively but dang that's another band I don't love so I didn't really care about them.

If I had to name one performance as best, I'd say BRMC. First show of the Sunday, small audience, too bad for the thousands who missed 'em!

Re: Music Festival

<grin>

a puzzling detail - there were big video screens flanking the stage. For ALL the bands/artists, EXCEPT for Dylan's set, there were videocamera men/women - showing musician closeups and various angles. For Dylan, tho, there was only one wide static shot showing the width of the stage - in other words, for people far from the stage, there was only a video view of what they saw anyway from a distance.
Guess Dylan specified that in his contract??
