I would also consider the Outlaw 990 preamp/processor ($1100) with the Outlaw 7500 power amp ($1600).

For a SACD player besides the Krell SACD Standard, the $5000 Sony or $6000 Pioneer you either have to quadruple the price for a better SACD player or compromise for lesser sound quality with universal players costing less.

The Krell SACD Standard should be a very good player for $4000 and it is. I had a chance recently to listen to one through a Krell KAV-400xi and Vandersteen Audio Quatros. Way above my budget but sure sounded good. There is a Krell SACD Standard on AudiogoN right now for $2400.

What loudspeakers are you considering?

Didn't ST rave about the relatively new Parasound Halo amp products? I know he did not check out the HT products, but they sure look like they would deserve a listen for a near high-end HT experience. If they sound like they look they should be very nice. I would put them on my short list for an audition.

Jackfish, Jim, Thank you for taking the time to respond. I will be sure to check out your recommendations. My current system consists of Musical Fidelity Tri-Vista SACD through Tri-Vista Integrated into Sonus Faber Grand Pianos. To my ears this provides a lovely warm tone for jazz and classical, but seems to struggle a little on rock. I thought by adding the Krell/Linar combo to my system I could try multichannel and also achieve more slam with rock and pop??? In this scenario I would add Sonus Faber centre and surrounds. Any thoughts? Regards, Grant

Buying used right now would be good move. The Outlaw 990 is a great value but in another year the new model will have HDMI 1.3 and support the new HD sound formats. I purchased a Marantz 4001 this year just to tide the family room Ht over for a year or so. I will invest serious money in the processor only when convinced the lossless improvements are relatively stable.
