I can never remember the model. They've sold it at Radio Shack for 200.00 but it's almost always marked down to 100.00. It's not Arcam or Cambridge + a tuner, but it's really jaw dropping for 100.00.

Hi Jgossman

The Sherwood RX-4105 sold at Parts Express for $99.00. I own 5 of them in different variations of moding. I'm listening to it now. It's one of my favorite amp sections. If they did make an integrated version they would easily slip into the recommended components I would think.

I could be wrong, but I haven't seen a plastic face plate in the recommended components since the Acrcam Diva series. Awe how I loved those sub $2k Diva amps and CDP's. They were just so good, plastic faces and all. Maybe if Meridian would place a very high quality acrylic face plate on it and charge 1800.00, it would stand a chance at being a solid class b contender. It Harman International would put a half inch sculpted anodized face on it and call it Mark Levinson, the sky would be the limit, in price and class rating.

I kid.

Sort of.

For all I know Harman International owns Sherwood TOO and has actually considered such moves.

LOL, our beloved Stereophile will get there in time.

Can't remember when it was, I was pretty young, but I remember my idea of a high end car always had to do with not only performance but an exotic interior. A true exotic car had to have steel and wood insides. So anyway the first time I saw the plastic in a Mercedes I was pretty taken back. High end audio will go through this same change, and why it is taking so long I would think is because this hobby has been able to push the re-peat client pitch. That however is coming to an end with this generation, and the young music lovers are more intune with modern style and feel. Plastic to today's listener means something completely different than it did to the guy who thought moving from wood to metal was a good move. Metal has ran it's course and might be still used as an accent but for performance your going to see a lot of wood and plastic in the future and it has already started. As plastic has become high end in autos so will it be in audio. Personally it's been my experience that the plastic chassis smoke the metal ones.

I gave an answer, but then I said "not this time".

TM tell me the technical reasons why the metal is better than the plastic?

I've moved the question of chassis to Tuneland. http://tuneland.techno-zone.net/t276-metal-vs-other-chassis

A metal chassis is actually an antenna for RF and other fields.

Michael,

I hope that you can work the Marantz CR510 Digital Receiver into your reviews. It's a class D and a relatively unusual, and somewhat modestly priced product at $499/$599 with a lot of features.
