Their recordings are superb. I highly recommend them. Their other products range from overpriced all the way to, you're out of your mind. $800 for a piece of wood and some brass footers (speaker stands)? They sure don't need to sell many with the profit structure they work with.
x2 what JoeE said.
If you want great isolation products at a great price go to Herbies.
I buy recordings from them all the time. nothing else though.
I have a sampler of their jazz recordings. Each track is beautifully, naturally recorded--but the performances are trite and unimaginative (IMO).
Agreed. Often very nice sound but uninteresting content.
There are some exceptions however according to various reviewers. Unfortunately I don't recall which are considered worth listening to.
CLIFORD JORDAN QUARTET:
Live At Ethell's
One you will usually see mentioned and IMHO a fine performance and recording.
Agreed! And Kendra Shank's "Afterglow" ain't too shabby, either.
I own both Kendra Shank and Monica Worth. Both are great recordings with very good, real world performances. They sound like the singers would naturally sound standing right next to you. Very nice work.
Their blues stuff is exceptionally well recorded and quite musical. Especially Sunnyland Slim and Drink Small, both recorded live, both coincidentally available on 2-CD set. I also like their Ionoclast for zapping CDs and interconnects.
I was asking this very question maybe 2 years ago.
I bought one CD of Blue Grass & I like the music & the quality. I will be buying more soon. I would agree that everything else is quite expensive. Except maybe some of their modified equipment. Again, to each his own.
what I find really interesting is Pierre's choice of microphone. He uses two PZMs (baffled) into a tape machine through a preamp of some sorl. PZMs are not typically used as "lone stereo pair" mics..but work well as on-stage, conferance call captures,/reinforcement, etc.. I guess he has modified his, though..
anyway............I love his recording work. he is an incredibly smart guy
For the record just looking at a picture of their power cords scares the shit out of me. I don't know how they can meet any electrical code.
Aren't their interconnects 56 gauge/air dielectric?
