I used to keep up with the professional surfing. Loved watching them ride the big ones.

I think they were bigger than you remember. The waves today at Mavericks off of Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay are running about 25 feet. In March, during the annual surfing contest it's not unusual for them to be in the 40' plus range. There are even claims of waves in the 60-80' range.
