That Onkyo receiver isn't too bad and at that price will allow you to get a little better speakers. It will get you by for a while and you can get something better later. Many here will suggest buying used to stretch your minimal budget.

I started out pretty close to that budget not too long ago: I bought a Denon receiver & CD Player and a pair of Paradigm Phantom speakers. I loved that system!

I second the recommendation of the Oppo universal player. Best bang for the buck!!!!
