Looking for a bit of an upgrade

Hi all I am a budding audiophile that has had a certain amount of guidance from my father who is very deep into it. I am pretty happy with my setup but I was wondering what I could improve. I am looking for a most bang for your buck upgrade to really get the most out of my system. I guess my question is what should I get as an upgrade? I am a grad student so I am kind of broke so i have maybe a $500 limit. Right now I am thinking maybe better speaker cables, maybe a better way to listen to my iPod, which is now hooked up through the aux input I have been looking into DACs. Any help or suggestion would be awesome.

So here is what I currently have:

Marantz Model 250 power amp
Conrad Johnson PV2ar preamp
Rega P3 turntable and tone arm
Grado Silver cartridge

For speakers I have been bouncing back and forth between Phase Tech teatro 2.5 and B+W DM 550. I can't tell which I prefer.

Interconnects are some older monster cables and the same with the speaker cables.

That is a good selection of gear...I have had good experience with Phase Tech, don't know the other speakers. I'd go up one step on the Cartridge and consider speaker cables..or a power cable to the amp.

cable suggestion

These days there are alot of companies building very fine audio cables for reasonable prices.

If you are looking for a cable upgrade, then I would suggest StraightWire. These cables were the ones I first started out with and I was very content with their performance. Plus, they have been around forever and have a proven track record.

StraightWire Encore IC's
StraightWire Maestro speaker cables
StraightWire Info-link digital cable

You may even be able to find some good used ones on the AudiogoN website.

Best of luck,
Mark Evans

Upgrade?

Do you have or play CD's? Have you considered a CD or SACD player?

If you want good used cables for a reasonable price check the link below.

Great Input (pun intended)

Hi everyone thanks for your input. I think cables is how I am going to tackle this issue. I have been told by a friend to check out Anti-Cables and they look pretty solid and affordable. I'll probably grab some speaker cables and interconnects for between my power and pre amp.

In regards to CDs I think I am from that generation (I am 26) that grew up on CDs and no one I know really listens to them anymore. It might be romanticism but if I have to own an artifact to listen to music LPs are what I look for. When I listen to digital files it is normally FLAC or another type of lossless file.

Thanks
Kevin
