Nice writing!
I always thought that the average two-channel set up looked like an altar of audio, a/k/a "grand devotion".
...and the stooping to cue-up a record is the corresponding act of genuflection. That is the real problem with all this remote controlled digital stuff, no reverence.
However, Dave's point is well taken. Once again, I think it is high time 'the boy' is given a proper permanent column. Apart from the fact I just hugely enjoy his writing, I can't help thinking that having a reviewer slightly more in touch with the college 'dorm' perspective would surely help attract a new generation of readers to the hobby and to the magazine.
While browsing head-fi the other day I was struck by the scale of participation from rabidly committed younger members. If their handles are to be believed many of these run multiple headphone rigs and are on their fourth or fifth generations of systems, and judging by the temperature of the debate many of them really care about sound quality. The members' birthdays falling on that day (some hundred-or-so) spanned from eighty-something to fourteen!
A big YES to everything you just wrote.
And thanks to Dave for getting this started.
Yep. I second that. Stephen's blog is the only one I read on regular basis. Even though I don't particularly care about vinyl, his blogs are a fun read and immerse you in the experience of discovery. I say, give the boy a column!
Column!
Column!
Column!
Column!...
Yeah, the Head-fi phenomenon is amazing. There are more posts there in a minute than we get here in an hour. Those guys and gals are enthusiastic and enjoy their music and cans.

One of the highlights of wine and audio, for me, is getting to do it with somebody.
I have yet to meet a true audiophile or wine lover who was not freely willing to share the fruits of his hobby.
How cool is that? Instant comaraderie!
For those who haven't gotten their July issue. The "As We See It" is by Stephen. Probably, not a regular gig but maybe it's JA testing the waters.
The picture is of a very fancy teponatzli. The teponatzli is a traditional Aztec log drum with an H-slit in it. The H-slit produces two separate tones because of the different sizes of the slits. The one I was using in my recording was not nearly as nice as the one pictured.
I really appreciate the love you have all shown for this blog post, and I look forward to posting more this summer.
The one pictured looks like a museum piece, so I was hoping that you weren't using that one...

I thought it was a phallic symbol.
"Once again, I think it is high time 'the boy' is given a proper permanent column."
Hear hear! Ditto to all of the above- get "the kid" a column! Stephen's writing and perspective is the future of our hobby--- and I'm glad there IS one!
Subconscious much?
on another note, I had to go to the doctor today because of a 101 degree fever and a sore throat. turns out I had some sort of infection. The point of this story is the name of my doctor was Dr. Fallis.
You have yet to receive the bill.
You mentioned 'trane in the blog.
You should buy Ike Quebec's, "Heavy Soul."
A quick review: "O.M.Frikkin'G."
Doug, it's "the kid's" kid...

I made the same mistake initially, speedreading let me down as usual and I didn't notice Ariel's byline. Actually the mistake is easily made as their writing styles bear more than a passing resemblance, and they seem to be very much on the same wavelength regarding, f.i. women in tight tops. Could they by any chance be related? I think we should be told!
Anyway, both write really beautifully; Stephen's vinyl odyssey has been one of the most compelling reads in (well, almost in) Stereophile for years.
Who knows, if Stephen gets his own column maybe Ariel can appear as a regular guest? A kind of twofer? Anyway, I feel confident that JA, wise as he is, cannot have missed either "boy's" rather obvious talent. So what is he waiting for?
Right- gotcha- but you get my point. Give Stephen a column and let "his kid" tag along.
Thanks very much, everyone.
This excellent entry was all Ariel. When he submitted it, he said he wasn't sure if it worked. I was instantly impressed by it, however, and found myself smiling all the way through. Ariel made me proud with this one. I almost hate to say it, but the truth is: There's no way in the world that I could have written this piece, as I'm already too far from what Ariel sees -- the beauty that hi-fi holds at its very core, in its purest, purest form. I think that purity is exactly what Ariel communicated in this piece. I'll be looking forward to reading more from him.
