I am listening to a University of West Georgia Saxophone Enesmble recording. It is not at all slick, kinda super indie packaging. The music is REALLY interesting, and this is not my usual cup of tea by a long shot. The production is clear, accurate, and spacious. And it was recorded by our own Jim Tavegia!

OUTSTANDING JIM!!!!!!!

Color me impressed, and I am listening on my smaller system, I will check more out tonight in the big room. But the recording is really killer and impressive.

So here is to Jim!

Trey

I agree. Jim's recordings are great!

IICORMM is great. And SO well recorded. I bet you have the dvd-a, right Keld? I can also recommend Another Stoney Evening by Nash and Crosby. It is just DTS, but still a fine recording. Have you heard the dvd-a of Chicago II with the silver cover? Another good rock dvda.

Keld, we have similar enough taste that I am beginning to think we are musical twins. Sorry pal. 8)

Trey

I have the old, scratched lp, but still there's something about it. I also like "Wind on the Water" with Crosby and Nash.

I have no records whatsoever with Chicago, sorry, but I'll look for it

No need to be sorry - Nice to have a musical twin

Cheers

Jim's recording of University of West Georgia Saxophone Ensemble from April 2010 in 24/96. I find track #2 exceptionally beautiful. I wonder what it is? But the whole recording is great. Thanks again, Jim

Re: Listening to...

From April 2010 UWG Wind Ensemble, Music Dept Head:
Dr. John Bleuel.

Tracks 1-3 are from First Suite in E flat (1909) Gustav Holst

1.) Chaconne
2.) Intermezzo
3.) March

track 4: Pavane Op 50 (1887) Gabriel Faure

track 5: 10+1 (actually 20+1, THE FULL ENSEMBLE WITH PIANO) Lucie Robert'-Diessel, French composer, original composition written for the UWG Wind Ensemble Dr. Linda Li-Bleuel, Piano (music professor at Clemson Univ) the Ensemble leader's wife.

track 6: Te Lucis anta Terminum J. Aaron McDermid

track 7 from Carmen(1875) Georges Bizet (left as 1 track) consisting of Aragonaise, Les Dragons D'Alcala, & Les Toreadors.

I could have broken up track 7 and probably could have and still could as it is easy to do. That would have made tracks 7,8,9.

Hey freako! Just played this LOUD on multi-ch SACD. What a sonic blast to the past. A phenomenal album in its day. (And today, too)

The SACD says same. I got to see him in the mid-70's Station To Station tour. He had the Memphis Horns and a fat rhythm section adding lots of swing and swagger. It was good.

Madeleine Peyroux: Careless love

I just received it 10 minutes ago from Amazon

Edit:

Madeleine's voice and singing definitely's got some "Billie Holiday"-ish 1940 to it, and it seems Bernie Grundman did try to extend this to the whole recording. Great CD, love it

Re: Listening to...

Satkin, I enjoy Stereolab as well. They started me on a bit of a kick and led me to the group Ivy, which also has a French speaking singer (though she typically sings in English) and the Vivian Girls who have the same kind of vibe for me as Ivy and Stereolab, even though they play loud, distorted guitars and sound like they recorded in a empty warehouse. Give them a listen and tell me what you think!

I am listening on the road this week as we vacation in south Louisiana. We were tooling around back roads this AM listening to ZZ Top. I could have gone more trad blues or som Professer Long Hair, but the Top was right on target. I love my iPod! It is the world's best radio station. And never a bad tune!

I have friends that live in Cajun country; Eunice, Carencro, LeBlanc It is another experience all-together to listen to Southern Rock while traveling the Bayou.

The drive over Atchafalya basin's 5 mile bridge as the sun sets over that grassy marshland while listening to some choice tunes is very nice. Alison Krauss is one of my favs to listen to at that time.

Thanks to both of you. I'm glad you have enjoyed them and you find the technology very enjoyable and demanding. I will definately have to upgrade my mics sometime this year. Always room for improvement. It has been a great science project.

Listening to:

Bob James and 4Play: X ralaxing smooth jazz

I also enjoyed my free download of BlueCoast Music from the CA Show info.

Re: Listening to...

I just wanted to say thank you to so many of you who have made me aware of such a wide variety of new (to me), great music that I would have never found without your input. School is starting back and I had to say what a great summer it has been for listening to great, new music and the conversations we have shared about formats and hardware choices.

I have learned so much this summer and much has been because of your willingness to share your ideas on music and how we listen to it. I think my two favorite AS WE SEE IT pieces have come from Jon Iverson and John Marks about where we fall in our likes and dislikes departments that makes us who we are, and about what we would like to see in an improvment in how the music we love is delivered to us.

It seems we would like higher quality, but our voice in the business is a small one. The labels may ignore us, but we are not going away. They just keep pressing those hirez vinyl discs inspite of a dead format. Maybe there is hope for 2496?

Thanks for a great summer. I wonder what the fall holds? HMMMMM.
