I'm unaware of any problems with ferrofluid over a twenty year timespan. If the tweeter sounds good, I suspect the ferrofluid is OK. Foam surrounds suffer deterioration. KEF was using a rubber surround on the 104/2's. There is no way to check the appearance of the inner driver without disassembling the speaker. The crossover components should be fine if the speakers have not been abused. The only way to reliably check for problems in the crossover itself would be to disassemble the speaker. Any drift in the component values over time would probably amount to less than occurs when you heat the components up by playing the speaker. If your amplifier likes the 104/2's, and most are fine with this speaker, it's up to your ears to decide whether to make the purchase.
