Someone who spends an insane amount of money on wires, cones, etc.
As often happens with labels, the word "audiophile" has different meanings for different folks. How would you explain what it means to a friend?
I would explain to my friend that audiophiles are obsessive maniacs who can be split into two groups: Audiophile Retentives and Audiophile Expulsives. Audiophile Retentives can only play the first thirty seconds of any recording before they compulsively start tweaking and switching cables or tubes. Audiophile Expulsives will only play complete movements or whole sides of recordings and tend to spend a lot of time in-between talking about the art of listening and the art of music reproduction. Male audiophiles can develop a form of Oedipus complex where they attempt to replace their father's equipment with a system that will lure women with hearing that is sensitive to the audiophile's needs
The world of "audiophilism" is a rather difficult entity to explain, but I'll do my best anyway. An audiophile, first and foremost, exhibits a love of music. Secondly, an audiophile cares about what recorded music sounds like. Over a period of time, an audiophile, usually in stepping-stone increments, refines his/her aural palette such that the standards which are accepted as "good" become increasingly stringent. Lastly, an audiophile is one who is willing to share his/her knowledge with others without being condescending or "standoffish." It is indeed the duty of an audiophile to point out the therapeutic effects of music. In this respect, it sure helps for an audiophile, such as myself, to be a formally trained musician, as well.
As I already said in a past vote, I don't like very much the word "audiophile." I much prefer "music lover." On the other hand, the easiest way to enjoy music is through an audio system at home, thus the word "audiophile." When I talk with non audiophiles, I quickly replace "audiophile" with "music lover." The first word is just to set the discussion, and the latter the best way to continue it. I'm definitely a music lover first.
A pompous individual who obsesses over gear rather than listens to music and who pontificates about how they would never deviate from the "purity" of the original source signal by inserting some particular component or digital encoding scheme. Please refer to last week's "Do you ever listen to music on your computer?" question for some excellent examples.
Audiophile (awe-dee-oh-file)1. A person who prides him/herself on the quality of reproduction of music with exacting replication. 2. A person who invests large sums of money in the purchase of expensive and cutting edge technology centered on accurate reproduction of pre-recorded or broadcast music. 3. A sucker for audio dealers to delight in removing the sucker's money from his wallet 4. A lover of music, to a degree of incomplete satisfaction
