Before you start worrying about 7.1, you need to upgrade the 5.1 system you have, and improve its performance. More is usually not as good as better. Don't just tack more stuff onto a flawed system.
Your first priority should be getting a more appropriate center speaker from B & W. The HTM62 S2 would look like the one to get for your system. It seems to go for around $450.
The next thing to get would be a pair of 686 speakers.
The next thing would be to get a high-quality subwoofer (budget $700-1000 for that).
Those improvements should be a major upgrade of your sound quality. First things first.
Once you have these speakers in place, you can see whether you really want to expand the system to to 7.1 or not. You may not really need or want to.
If so, you should probably get another pair of the 686 speakers.
Thanks for the feedback.
Makes sense.
I think that I have become a bit attached to the Athena speakers as they have given me a good run. Your suggestion is a sound one.
I will do the exercise and start replacing the Athena's during this year. Being in New Zealand choices are not that abundant.
I will post a feedback as things get completed.
Thanks again
I have just been on the web and read the negative report. I am not a audiophile but am interested to learn more therefore my proposed speaker upgrade on my Marantz 7009. I am a bit concerned am I going in the right direction? My budget only allows me to buy in this price bracket being the B&W 686 S2 or equivalent.
I would really like some sort of clarity regarding this report - Thanks
Hi Commsysman or anyone
I have an opportunity to purchase a CM centre 2 display model at half retail price. Will this speaker be okay with the 684,s I presently have? Would I then need to up grade my next set of speakers to the CM range?
Let me know - thanks Richard
