It would seem that you have a problem with one channel of the preamp section of the receiver.
Being able to record from the internal tuner would indicate that the switching involved bypasses or does not include the defective circuit, which should be a very good clue for tracking down the problem.
You should try recording from an external device, which no doubt will not work on both channels.
A bad coupling capacitor is a possibility, or a bad transistor. Spending a lot of money on high-grade coupling capacitors is not going to be very productive with that receiver.
It is a very old receiver, which was sold by J.C Penny, and it is probably going to take some work by a skilled technician to track it down and fix it. I would expect that to cost from $120 to $200.
Unless you have some emotional attachment to it, I would spend some money on a new receiver.
The Sony STR-DH130 is only $120 and might be a better unit. The Sherwood RX4508 is $130 and would also be worth a look.
I have had many problems with intermittent switching/bad contacts with loudness switches.
Try switching the loudness switch on and off 10 or 20 times, and see if that has any effect. Also, you could get a can of spray contact cleaner and spray into that switch (and some of the other input switches) to see if that helps.
