Ooh, ooh -- a question I can answer (sort of).
Michael Fremer's new DVD, It's a Vinyl World After All, offers lots of info on this. It actually includes "a long, bloviating take" on record collecting. We'll have the DVD available for purchase on our eCommerce page next week.
But one of the things Michael stresses is that every record collector will have to do a lot of work to figure it all out. A few of the more sought-after labels he mentions are RCA "Living Stereo," Mercury "Living Presence," British Decca and EMI, and "pink label" Island.
I highly recommend the DVD. It's a hoot. It also includes a PDF with a very long list of online resources for info on exactly what you're looking for, such as: The Record Collectors Guild and, of course, Michael's own Music Angle.
There is also a sidebar on how to identify scribe marks and the associated cutting engineers.
I'll have more thoughts on Michael's new DVD next week, to be posted on our home page.
Sorry about the delay on this. Michael Fremer's new DVD is now available from our secure e-commerce page.
It's A Vinyl World, After All costs $29.99. You can also buy both of Michael Fremer's DVDs -- It's A Vinyl World, After All and 21st Century Vinyl -- for a special package price of $49.99.
