Great Black Saint-Soul Note news!

Anybody who listened to a lot of jazz in the 80s knows the Black Saint-Soul Note labels. The Jazz Loft now lists four boxed sets which - it says - are remasters and only the first in a series.

Henry Threadgill, who is also going to be the subject of an upcoming Mosaic box, gets one which includes both Air and solo work.

Charlie Haden gets a box that includes the first Old & New Dreams and one of the great albums of the 80s, 'Etudes,' with Gerri Allen.

Enrico Rava and Enrico Pieranunzi also get boxes. They're decently priced - it works out to $10 or less a cd, depending on the box.

Let's hope we get multi-volume David Murray and Steve Lacy sets as well.

Yes it is really good news to read that many Black Saint and Soul Notes will once again be available.

And add to the "hoping they get reissued" list:

Muhal Richard Abrams
Don Pullen
Don Pullen & George Adams Quartet
World Saxophone Quartet
and many others which I just can't think of right now.

They took a bit to get here, but I now have the Threadgill and Haden sets.

The packaging is decent, though unspectacular: white boxes with small photos of the albums inside.

There are no books or extra takes, just the original albums in cardboard reproductions of the original sleeves.

I'm just starting to listen, so can't really speak to the remastering - but C. Haden's 'Silence' sounds very good.

All in all, a solid buy, given the money involved and what you get.
