Hello.

So a good place for lots of technical information on computer audio is computeraudiophile.com.

A NAS can store your music and your photos. It is a basic server that it will run lightweight file read/write/streaming services. In general a NAS won't care what files you are storing on the drives. The difference is what file/streaming protocols it supports. Most will support browsing files, like pictures, and streaming content, like movies and audio.

They can be attached to your network wirelessly or by wire, though wire is better because of the higher throughput and the greater certainty that there won't be any radio interference. The latter isn't usually a big problem in a house, but it can be a problem in apartment buildings where an entire block might all own the same Linksys router. To your specific point about running the wire across the room, can't you just place the NAS network to the wireless router and connect the cable?

If you don't want it to be able to access the internet, you can use your router to deny it access to the web. Similarly you can use the router to make sure nothing external can get to the NAS.

Since the NAS, router and streamer are all on the same network, they are all connected to each other. If you use a wired connection from the NAS to the router, I guess you would see that as the NAS connected to the router.

The streamer would typically access the NAS wirelessly.

Hope that helps.
