I love Frisell. He has incredible range and you never know what to expect.

His "858 Quartet" with cello, violin, viola and Bill's guitar and electronics is amazing. It's an interpretation of the abstract paintings of Gerhard Richter. It can be "challenging" to listen to at times, but it works well when you're in a mood to be serious for 45 minutes or so. It's nicely packaged with miniatures of the 8 paintings.

Highly recommended, but only if you like very modern music. BTW, the other strings are often making "noises" but you also get some really nice, raw strings sounds on this well recorded CD.

Dave, I know you're a long-standing fan of Frisell, and I know just from that, you've an impeccable taste in music. I do own the 858 disc based on Gerhard Richter's paintings. Talk about cross-pollination of media! I love it when artists hybridize and reach out to other forms of art. Frisell/Richter's an example. John Zorn's film music is another instance, I like his scores for Godard a lot. I just learned that there's a Philip Glass opera based on J. M. Coetzee's novel, Waiting For Barbarians, that's playing in the UK now!

I'm somewhat of a fan of Richter's works, too, so I appreciated Frisell's album all the more. Sorry for the self-importantish link, but last year, I referenced Gerhard Richter's series of paintings on Baader-Meinhof here:

and about this weird unknown Chinese dude who made an immaculate copy of a Richter painting here:

I briefly mentioned Waiting for the Barbarians in my linking of Coetzee's latest novel and Bach's polyphony here:

The last piece of self-promotion is that you can read my book review of B. S. Johnson's The Unfortunates in this month's issue of The Believer magazine, which is out at Barnes & Noble or local bookstores/newsstands now. (But the better reason to get the mag is the excellent interview w/ filmmaker Gus van Sant & that girl from The Flight of the Conchords; the July/August issue is the one to get for the music junkies. Their music issue comes with an excellent CD of original material... previous contributors included David Byrne, Sufjan Stevens, Yo La Tengo, Feist, Joanna Newsom, etc.)

Wow, thanks for the treasure trove. I'll need to study for a while, but thanks for putting me on the scent.
