Dudamel on 60 Minutes

This is a very impressive guy.
Anyone who says he can't conduct is making an indefensible statement.
DeFacto, he can conduct. He obviously has the technique and musical education to competently perform his job.

Whether one likes his interpretations and his conducting style is a different matter. It is certainly defensible to say one doesn't like his conducting.

However , many do like him , including orchestra members. Orch. players usually love to hate their conductor so that is impressive too :-)

He has impressive skills, IMO, as a musician and conductor. I need to hear more to know how much I like or dislike his musical ideas.

I am very impressed with his commitment to "El Sistema"
wherein youth orchestras provide a different alternative to disadvantaged youth.

I have a friend who was in Chavez's cabinet as minister of culture.
He told me all about el sistema and the good results they got there.

At times, military planes took the youth orch. to their venues.

Does he have any good Sean Penn stories?

Great image!

Sometimes there were "special forces" on those planes when they were playing concerts near a border.

When that started happening my friend left the country.

It is unfortunate that el sistema was at times misused there. That doesn't change the fact that it is a great program that will work here as well.

Yes, excellent program.

It hadn't occurred to me that there might be military on the plane. I liked the idea of military plans dropping of musicians.

The military weren't supposed to be, it was an "oh, BTW moment"

Re: Dudamel on 60 Minutes

Another story I was told:

Chavez was on live TV with 1st graders talking about the importance of school.
He misspelled a word and the Minister of Education corrected him........

On Live TV !!

Chavez laughed and made it into a joke but shortly after the Education Minister vanished.

Don't piss off the dictator.
