Ambient music is akin to masturbation insofar as one is listening to passive, as opposed to active, music.

I'm not exactly sure what Tom's definition of "ambient music" is, but I think he is referring to music that borders on sound effects. In that case, yeah, I do like that stuff. I also like music that isnt afraid to experiment and take off on a cool sound, even though it may not be really music, per se. However, if he is referring to listening to whales singing, count me out. I hate that new age crap.

Tangerine Dream, Anthony Phillips, David Sylvian plus a plethora of other German/American/English keyboard musicians.

I listen to CBC Galaxy Ambient music on my satellite radio occasionally. I find it to be relaxing and very creative at times.

I assume the question refers to a specific genre, but I'll answer by saying that I often use music in an ambient mode. The Impovised Music From Japan series is great for this particularly the live "...Off Site" trilogy. But Morton Feldman is the king.

...Like I can escape. Elevators, offices, on hold, on TV--I can't ignore music wherever I hear it. Sometimes I can identify the pop songs on intercoms when all you can hear is the bass line. Christmas is just a hellish time for me. If Burl Ives were not alrready dead, I'd say he should be killed....

Depends what you classify as ambient, but I enjoy Tangerine Dream, Future Sound of London, etc. However, where does ambient end and dance begin? Or ambient and electronic, and so on?

I like Brian Eno.

I most definitely share Tom's passion for ambient music. About 95% of what I listen to is ambient. It comes in so many different styles and so much of it really brings out the full capability of a sound system. I just can't say enough good about it!

Only over Internet radio through iTunes. And then only when I'm in an ambient mood. And then not for long. Then I sleep. I sleep. Sleep....

I always like to have music in the background but I use it only as a sound fill. The real enjoyment is sitting in the sweet spot.

I listen to ambiant music at low level only with FM music and exclusively in 5 channels with my Meridian 565.

Ambient music sometimes has a place within "real" music, but that's about all I can deal with.

I enjoy it in the kitchen while preparing food - washing dishes, etc. Love listening to NPR.

Actually, I have no idea what it is, so I assume I never listen to it.

Tony P., Washington, DC's picture

Definitely, although more as a background than for active listening. Some favorites: Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Tim Story, Kevin Keller, Giles Reaves.

Brian Eno to the rescue! Love Kruder & Dorfmeister, Theivery Corporation, Air, Boards of Canada—not strictly ambient, but down tempo.

Absolutely. Music performed in real time and real space, using real acoustic instruments (basic electric guitars are acceptable), is the only kind that I consider to be "real". Anything else is what I call assisted music or fabricated music.... AKA a cop-out

I love listening to music for relaxation. Often I'll listen to adagios or other relaxing classical music. Occasionally I'll tune into some New Age tunes. But the pure ambient stuff has no appeal for me. I guess I want my music to have a melody--with each selection having a start, middle, and ending.

Yes, if you consider Moby and Aphex Twin ambient artists.

This is a difficult question to answer specifically, as there are many definitions as to what comprises "ambient" music, with many sub-genres existing within that broader categorization. I do listen to an awful lot of electronic music, however, with my preferences leaning heavily to the "Berlin School" sequencer-based music of bands like Tangerine Dream, Ashra, Redshift, Radio Massacre International, Arcane, Kubuschnitt, and Free System Projekt, to name but a few. I've liked this music since I was in my early twenties, and even as my musical tastes have grown and matured over the intervening years, I find my love of this type of music has in no way diminished. And, as a bonus, most of the music is very well recorded, which is in direct contrast to a lot of the rock/pop music being released these days.
