Do Forum users Constitute a useful statistical sample?

One of the premises JA offered in support of concern about the future of the high end was the increasing median age of Stereophile subscribers over time. I don't know how many subscribers the magazine has currently, but as I note the growth in the number of registered users of the forum and recognize that birth date is included in the registration I'm curious how the distribution of forum users by age might be panning out. My guess is that it might offer a more hopeful picture.

I'm assuming that the vast bulk of forum users are also subscribers, but I don't know how a population of 1100-1200 stacks up against the size of the subscriber list.

Hi, Cheapskate!

Good question.

I would bet we skew younger here, given the nature of how accessible we are to meet newbies.

I bet median income would skew below the print subscriber, by nature of the same "new to hi fi" feel I get from many posts and inquiries.

Hopefully, we're spreading the good vibes of hi fi and growing the community!

Page 167 of the January issue of the magazine states:

Total number of copies: 96,859

Total paid and/or requested circulation: 77,593

Then there are various free copies, etc., distributed.

We are but a fraction of the total readership and probably not a good gauge. I suspect there are a good many older readers that are on the cusp of being luddites when it comes to computers and Web stuff. I doubt they'll ever even visit the forums.

Thanks, Jeff, for digging out the numbers. You're probably right about the size and character of the sample despite the fact that it is larger and more typical than most of those behind the political polls some folks take so seriously.

About the luddite reference, consider the plight of older readers like me who are stuck in the web thing and have forgotten how to get out.
