Democrats have held the US Congressional seat in NY-09 since 1922.
But after Republican Bob Turner won Anthony Weiner’s old seat Tuesday night,
Democratic party leaders insisted the loss wasn’t a harbinger of things to come.
“It’s a very difficult district for Democrats,” said Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, noting its Democratic margins there tend to be the second lowest of all the districts in New York City.
The difficulty that Democrats experienced in NY-09 will follow them into 2012.
The Turner campaign had eagerly courted disenchanted Democrats, and outside polling places around the district on Tuesday, multiple longtime Democrats confessed that despite concern about Mr. Turner’s eagerness to slash federal spending, they chose him hoping that his election would get lawmakers’ attention.
“I am a registered Democrat, I have always been a registered Democrat, I come from a family of Democrats — and I hate to say this, I voted Republican,” said Linda Goldberg, 61, after casting her ballot in Queens. “I need to send a message to the president that he’s not doing a very good job. Our economy is horrible. People are scared.”
It’s one thing to send a message to the President,
It’s another thing for New York Democrats send a Republican to Washington.
DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz faces an uphill battle heading into 2012.
This statement by Debbie Wasserman Schultz can only be viewed as a huge tactical mistake by the DNC Chair. In light of the fact that Democrats have held the seat for nearly 90 years, her “difficult district” argument just won’t float. She would have been better off blaming George Bush’s economy. But now that DWS has chosen the path of ridiculousness, she has forefitted the Democrats ability to properly spin the horrendous election results.
Bob Turner and the Republicans are having no difficulty at all getting voters and the media to believe that this election result is nothing short of a shot across Obama’s bow. A warning to the President that if he does not change his policies on Israel and do something to improve the economy, he may well suffer the same fate in the 2012 election.
In the end, Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s lies and hyper partisanship will cost Democrats votes in 2012.
