DAC/Amplifier/Speakers

I would like to know which set up would be better:

1) Laptop + Active Speakers

2) Laptop + Amp + Passive Speakers

3) Laptop + DAC + Active Speakers

4) Laptop + DAC + Amp + Passive Speakers

I am new to this world. I currently own Altec Lansing VS 4121, so want to make that jump.

Considering AudioEngine as of now. Would want some more suggestions.

Budget being somewhere close to 30k/ $500. Can also look at a beginner's setup and may be add things later!

Budget

Is your budget $30K or $500?

It does make a difference...lol.

What kind of room?

What kind of music do you want to listen to?

Need a lot more info to even start getting into this.

For computer-based system, I use the Audioengine 2 speakers and a small subwoofer.

This works very well as long as you don't want huge volumes.

Room would be somwhere around 350 sq feet. Listen to all kind of music. Usually Alternative Rock!

not $500K

commsysman was referring to $500, that appeared to have been mis-interpreted. What he recommended is likely a good suggestion for starting, at this time. One can always improve later.
