Thank you for Tom Conrad's wonderful essay. Conrad makes many very valid points throughout his very thoughtful piece. Jazz is most certainly not dead nor anywhere near death. With respect to Conrad's very astute observation that jazz is now a truly international art form let me recommend a recent CD which clearly shows how good European jazz can be:
Various Artists - Umbria Jazz 11 (Blue Note)
This double CD features 29 tracks by some of the best known musicians of the Italian jazz scene. Although the tracks were compiled from existing recording and were not recorded live, they still make for a very compelling and very enjoyable listen. If you're unfamiliar with the European and Italian jazz scene I can think of no better place to start then this fine collection.
