Can you be more descriptive?
Is it a cyclical clicking as in turntable platter rotation? If it is it could be as simple as a bad belt, idler wheel, or worse as in a bad spindle bearing.
If you have a friend who has a spare cart you could try changing that out and see what changes.
The sound is a rapidly repeating clicking sound that occurs when the stylus makes contact with a record (or any other surface). It is louder when the stylus first makes contact. It does not seem to be related to the turntable rotation frequency. I can make the noise occur by touching the tip of the stylus.
Hi Jim
He said "old" turntable. That means "old cartridge" too.
I am thinking of loose suspension here. What do you think ?
I have a suspicion that it is the cartridge. I'm looking for confirmation from someone who knows more than me.
Last night I put on an album that was slightly warped. The clicking occured when the stylus was starting to rise as it followed the warped album.
I agree. I bet there is a connection that is not intact and is just close enough together to make and then lose contact and make those sounds you describe.
A trial with another cartridge would be your best start, I bet.
