Classical music for rockers?

I grew up on Rock and Roll, or at least, got older, but I have learned to enjoy classical music over the last ten years. I really enjoy Tchaikovsky especially the 6th symphony( just don't know how to spell his name, or much else for that matter), and some of Carl Orfs cantatas, some Mozart, and even a little Wagner. Wagner was a little harder!

The question I have is, what other recommendations would you have for classical music that is active and involving? I'm sure someone will take exception to the phrasing, but my intentions are honorable.

I'm in a similar mode these days. I've tried many times over the years to enjoy classical music and it never really took hold...until recently.

I think you might like Shostakovich, Copland and Rimsky-Korsakov for starters.

So far, I seem to be gravitating toward Russian composers...no idea why, yet.

Re: Classical music for rockers?

If you haven't already, try the Beethoven Violin Concerto. My favorite is the Itzhak Perlman version, Angel. the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini. Then there are some fun reissues of Chicago Symphony stuff with Fritz Reiner conducting. Try Scheherazade for starters, I think you'll like it. When you're feeling adventurous go for some Mahler. His fourth symphony is another of the great CSO/Reiner/RCA reissues. Judging from what I can read into your posts, I'd say Gustav Mahler is your kind of guy. Three seems enough for now, but you asked for recommendations from a field so wide that this can go on for a long time. Have fun.

Cheapskate - I bought Scheherazade when the Living Stereo reissues came out. I do like that! I was happy to see the Review of Mr T 6th symphony in the May issue. I'll have to get that one. AND it's an SACD!

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm taking notes. Maybe tomorrow (Saturday) I can hit the local music shop.
