I suggest that you consider the PSB Alpha PS1 powered speakers, which run $299 and have amplifiers built in.
The Audioengine A2 speakers are also very good; I have them for my desktop PC and they do a good job.
I would not recommend the Lepai amplifiers.
Most desktop speakers benefit from the addition of a small subwoofer, but it does not need to be very large or expensive since the volume levels are modest.
