I'm not a big fan of Cerwyn Vega. Their bass is sloppy, the highs are sibilant and the mids are muddy. These are not hi-fi speakers. They're made to play loudly, but without any regard to fidelity to the signal they're fed.
Thanks for the heads up, but as I'm fairly poor :P I'm sticking with what I have for now: until I can afford something better
What is your preference on affordable stereo Hi-Fi AlexO?
I have no experience w/ them, but I just wanted to say hi & welcome!
Hey, thanks for the welcome Good to be here
You can do surprisingly well on a tight budget. PSB, Monitor Audio, Paradigm, Energy, and Gallo make very good affordable speakers.
Ahhh....Cerwin Vega. Brings me back to my first system. Yeah, the larger they go, the worse they get, but man they can play loud hahahah!(and almost never blow out). But hey- you gotta start somewhere right? I even paired them with a Creek 4140 integrated amp and the setup wasn't that bad. But I agree that you can do a lot better with PSB or similar and you'll get a far better experience. In the meantime, put a dark sock in that massive bass port (I'm not kidding) to tone down the boom, bring them away from the walls at least a foot and put some Blu-Tack under the corners to get the bottom surface off the floor. Use some decent Monster cable if you can to clean up the highs a bit.
Awesome, I will have to try some of that stuff. I have easy access to alot of different types of cables so I'm good there. I still wanna know, however, if anyone has a spec sheet for this particular model of speaker. Any info at all, like ohmic rating or wattage would benefit greatly.
May be you can try any of Polk Audio, Klipsch, Boston Acoustics or Tannoy. They all have some good speakers which are extremely affordable. They won't go as loud as Cerwin Vega, but hey, they will sound better. If its for home, go for any other. Don't even consider CV until its for the basket ball court.
I have a pair of M-100's that I bought new in 1990. I probably still have the spec sheet that came with them. I will check. I do remeber they were 400 watts max. I will let you know about the rest.
How old are the M100s?
Cerwin Vega is fine for a budget system and way better than what you get in a box system. I think they are one of the best non-audiofile brands. I have a pair of VE-8s that I use in a second zone that stems from my main system. Cerwin Vegas are much better than a lot of speakers you see out there in radio shack and what not.
I used some of them as center and surrounds on my main system when money was tight. The E-76c center was darn good for the money. Actually Cerwin Vega is not really all that cheap when buying new. They also make pro equipment for DJs and bands, mostly good feedback on that stuff too.
HEy dudes,
The M-100's came out in 1990. I bought mine in Korea at the time when I was in the Army. I use to crank them and get everyone mad at me in the barracks! LOL
I am actually selling mine on ebay right now if anyone is interested. I actually think they are the only pair on there.
