Just got into listening to music again. Am a bass player and play music a lot and figure I need to listen to music again. I put together a system with a Yamaha RS-500 a speakercraft 10" sub and have some Klipsch RB 61ii's my question is what is the deal on source. Is playing vinyl good? CD's ipod through a DAC need to know what it is that sounds good.

expect much from its phono section. Vinyl can be very satisfying if one can deal with its management issues (cleaning LPs, flipping LPs, fragile stylus, etc.). Well engineered and mastered CDs with the right player can also be very good. Digital music files should probably be CD quality (16-bit, 44.1kHz) at a minimum. Hence, get the iPod with the most memory or make a music server with a Mac or PC, and get a good DAC.

thanx looking to go the vinyl route for sure. are the albums being pressed today the same quality as they were of yesteryear or do they press albums that were originally digitally recorded

budget for a DAC?
I believe most recordings are digitally recorded into at least 24-bit, 96kHz, with some as high as 32-bit, 384kHz. The pressings are usually pretty good now with a lot of 180 gram offerings and many 200 grams. LPs back in the day were 120 grams I believe.
