CD Review: Jive at Five-The Joe Newman Quintet

Label: Prestige Total Time: 37:00 Recorded: May 4th, 1960
Sonics: **** Performanance: *****

While on a two week vacation from performing with the Count Basie band Joe Newman decided to get together some friends for a great session that is full of energy and bops. The talented team: Jow Newman-trumpet, Frank Wess-Tenor sax, Tommy Flanagan-Piano, Eddite Jones-Bass, Oliver Jackson-Drums comes together very nicely in the 6 songs on this disc. Rudy Van Gelder was the recording engineer and it really shows. The stereo seperation is a near perfect as one can get especially whenb Joe and Frank decide to have a bit of a blowing contest on Jive at Five. Although the CD is short, only 37:00 minutes I find myself listening to this CD again and again. Highly recommended very hard to find.

I would like to post more review of some jazz CD's that a lot of people may not be familar with. If you think this is a good idea let me know.

Sounds great, Rich! I'm getting my feet wet in jazz right now with J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins. It'll be great to have some less-known, but great sounding material to tuck away for further exploration later. I'm all for it!

You might want to place your reviews in the Jazz forum "area" rather than Rants and Raves. Others will find them faster unless they use the "Past 24 hours" link.
