I would put a file on a disc or thumb drive and try to play it.

You'll find out real fast.

When I was into computer audio, yes.  You may have to have a 24/98+ sound card.  Most 24bit soundcards will play AND record up to  24/196 or greater bit/frequency.  A Mac Mini will do it with software and is such a quick little machine will it not even flinch - or make a noise.  It's all solid state.
