Can bookshelf speaker be used on their own?

I'm considering putting together a budget system based on a wireless music streaming device such as a Apple Airport Express or Slim Devices Squeezebox.

I'm totally ignorant about modern hi-fi systems - my music system for the last 15 years has been a PC and a pair of earbuds! What I would like to know is, is it possible to use a pair of meduim sized bookshelf speakers on their own, or is a sub-woofer or a pair of towers needed?

I have a 300 sq ft listening space, with a hard floor. I listen to a wide range of popular music, no jazz or classical. I am not looking to be an audiophile - I just want to have something that sounds fairly decent.

Any suggestions would be welcome too. My budget for speakers is about $200. I'm hoping to get a refurbished deal or buy used.

Actually, you can get a pair of Infinity Primus 160s for $150 a pair and you would have a little better low end reproduction. They are quite an improvement over the Infinity SM65s I have. You could always add an Infinity PS10 subwoofer ($210) later if you wanted to improve the mid and low bass in your listening experience.

Since total sound accuracy is not the issue, and fun is, I would suggest looking at the JBL S50 at J and R Music World. www.jr.com $239 with free shipping. Or try the floor standing E 80's at $159.99 ea with free shipping. I would borrow $100 from someone close at that price.

I suggest pushing your budget up over $300 and getting the Epos ELS-3.
