Budget DAC's

I've got this new set of Beyerdynamic 880's and I'm playing lossless files out of my computer. I'm looking for some info about options for D/A conversion. At the moment I'm going optical digital from PC to Yamaha HTR5140 receiver but I bet I can do a lot better D/A conversion than that receiver. I've read the raves about the Musical Fidelity X-DAC which I guess I can pick up for $600 or so. I'm wondering if there are cheaper options. The front of the Stererphile website has a leading photo of these Entech DAC's... the article is from 1998?? Now it looks like I can pick up that 205.2 on ebay for <$100. Are these things still all that great? Seems like the mass market stuff might've caught up after 10 years.

Are there some good cheap(er) alternatives to the X-DAC?

I'll be looking into a headphone amp too.

Re: Budget DAC's

Musiland MD-10 for $300
Liteaudio DAC-60 for $470
There are some good DACs from http://www.diykits.com.hk/
The DIYEDEN Great March II for $425
If you can find a used Benchmark Media DAC-1 for $750 or less that might be good.

Both the Entech and Audio Alchemy DACs are worth it when found for a reasonable price on ebay.

Check out the Channel Islands Audio Dac-1. I used it for a CD upgrade adn now as my music server DAC. Great sound and budget price ($450) For a little more get the upgraded power supply.

Check out Musical Fidelity A324 DAC. It goes for about $600 on Audiogon and it pretty much blows everything else away for even 4x the money.

Re: Budget DAC's

Thanks, y'all. I wound up ordering the Beresford TC-7510 MK-6 for about $200. It includes a headphone amp and can handle 4 digital sources. Also thought about a Zhoalu but I don't know if I want to mod anything and that seems to be why they're so popular.

Other contenders were the MSB Link DAC & Del Canto DAC2. If I had that much money I'd like to get the Del Canto DAC2 and experience the upsampling.
