backing up cd collection: any loss in sound quality?

Short answer: Copies will be perfect duplicates, no worries.

Short-ish answer: As long as you are copying them digitally at full resolution, via the usual copy software by (e.g.) Roxio and similar companies.

Longer answers: to be written shortly by others, below, I'm sure.

If you have CD's with substantial damage, I'd suggest using Exact Audio Copy. The CD format includes error correction that EAC will utilize to attempt to reconstruct missing data. Also, it's free.

You should know that CD-Rs don't last forever.

thanks for the answers... regarding Exact Audio copy: the cds are still being read in full so there is no problem on that end, its just that i have a gut feeling that any more scratches and it will be the end of them.

Is there a specific "mode" of copying that i have to select ? i have nero burning rom (8.something) on my computer. I can use that or maybe there is something else?
