Lots of studio stuff going on in this one, but always enjoyable and interesting. This is the way to studio mix popular recordings.

Catch22:

This particular piece is indeed sonically interesting. I'm willing to open my mind and give it a good listen.

We just need a few more "yes's" and we're off!

So any other takers? Fellow Jazz Hounds..Don't be skeptical about the band...listen to the track...it really is interesting and a good suggestion!

Kind Regards,

Ron

All:

Please chime in with further recommendations on a next Reference piece. I for one know we all seem to have the most sense of community and fun doing this exercise. A shout out to Michael Green whom I saw first carry this out here.

So far we have two recommendations but haven't come to a unanimous decision yet. More pieces are welcome:

1. Supertramp: Brother Where You Bound
2. Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here

So we just need at least 3-4 "yes" feedbacks to get a new reference started.. again, feel free to nominate a new song as well if the above two just don't do it for you. Pretty much any musical genre is welcome, so don't let the category of Rock of these first two suggestions be a limiting factor. I'll also add my favorite Jazz back in...as that just eliminates too many great pieces..but let's set a boundary on northing from Miles Davis: Kind of Blue, as we just referenced a piece from that classic.

Respectfully,

Ron

3rd pass on SuperTramp and the drums are warmin up. I'm suprised that I haven't done a tuneup since Miles and have played maybe 6 or 7 recording since. Kind of a cool setting that has deep bass but also a great mid-range that is reaching way back in the depth. Especially the back ground rising of the synth throughout. That blanketed stage floor, perfect choice. The volume is set low actually which is interesting cause the dynamics, jump into my chest and floor. I could not do this one with headphones and get the same feel. Got to have that floor rumbling.

hope others will take the time to play this recording

Popping in just to comment that I agree you get that rumbling bass with headphones.

Looking on the bright side you can't get the tonality and detail and total lack of distortion I achieve with headphones.

It's ironic that Gilmour agreed to do the lead on this track since both bands were breaking up at the time. Davies and Hodgson were on the outs and Gilmour and Waters in much the same way and for the same reasons. Even the supposed deals worked out during the splits were the same with Hodgson and Davies agreeing not to play each others songs and Waters and Gilmour doing the same.

For me, the drum work and recording technique couldn't have been any better. It's pitch perfect and visceral, with a caverness spaciousness that captures the explosiveness of the attack, bloom and decay...and decay...and decay of each strike. The recording is full of "jump" moments of realism. Progressive rock is rarely recorded this well.

Janis Ian's, Breaking Silence, probably does the best job of creating this sort of spaciousness and realism that just jumps out at you and slaps you around, but it's far less interesting to listen to.

I think it might be more accurate to say this based on your own personal experience. In my listening I would take the in-room listening over the headphones in every way I could think of.

This is GREAT!

I feel like we are all back on track...and can put any differences behind us and get back to our true goal:

ENJOY MUSIC!

I for one am very happy and looking forward to this.

Again, the song this time around is:

Supertramp: Brother Where You Bound

I have a redbook rip of this.... and I was not aware David Gilmour, one of my favorite all-time guitarists, played on it!

Michael & Catch22:

You both seem to be ahead of us in listening - either of you care to start out with a Reference review? It looks like Catch has already started with some excellent observations!

Again, any and all media and system are welcome, but please advise which media was used and any system information you feel comfortable sharing was used during the reference.

Kind Regards,

Ron

ps. I am in the process of setting up my new listening room! Will do tuning with my Miles Davis references, then will try this song! Also, I will start a new thread now that we have decided on the piece. Please make further referencing observations on the NEW thread to avoid confusion and maintain consistency and standards with past referencing threads.
