More TV ads where small hi-end companies don't have to pay... which is not likely. Buying prime time ad space is impossible for all but big companies like SONY, who are putting most of their yen into home theater.

I was clear in my post that advertising is not inexpensive. But given the benefits that have acrued to Music Direct, hopefully that should motivate the industry to do some creative thinking on how to maintain the momentum. Like pooling resources under the banner of a consortium, which could do some television ads plus a strong www presence. There are any number of innovative solutions, once the initial inertia is overcome.
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. Just look at the financially successful audio companies (whose products ain't all that great as we all know) like Bose, Technics, Sony- all those mass market guys know that in the end, brand recognition trumps ALL 99% of the time.
The number one problem we had at the high end audio store I worked at in college was the simple question of: Well, how come I've never heard of any of these brands?" Our answer of "These companies spend all their money on making a better product instead of advertising" was never a very convincing argument, I afraid. Even the guys who could hear the difference right away still needed a lot of reassuring that the product was from a real company that would be around over time, etc.
Right or wrong, advertising, IMAGE, in this world means everything. It's how you have a successful company, or get elected to office...
