Did you select the right optical input. You should be able to toggle between the different digital inputs. Since it a toslink, I would assume you need to set it to optical input 1

There is a Digital Input button on the remote and pressing it should cycle through your input options. Look for Optical In. Also, make sure you connected to the optical input not output. That is the exact kind of mistake I would make. I recently spent time on the phone while setting up a cable box only to remember I forgot to connect the cable. Embarrassing but it happens.

Thanks once again Bierfeldt. I will not be home until 8am tomorrow morning and I will give that a try.

There is only one place to plug the Toslink in on the CXC ( output ) so I naturally assumed that I would plug the other end into the input on the CXN. Got nothing, so tried the other one and still got nothing. Went to the settings and couldn't find anything that mentioned optical input/output. Is it possible you can only do it from the remote?

I will try it tomorrow and let you know.

Thanks

David

I looked at that "manual" if you can call it that.

- Spot on, output from the CXC to Input on the CXN. Double check that you switched it back.
- Try that Digital Input button as that will likely cycle through the different inputs and yes there is a good chance that it will only work on the remote. Cambridge has a tendency to do things like this and looking through the menu/settings in the book, I didn't see a digital input menu.
- The CXN functions as a preamp and I am not sure if you need to turn that functionality off. In settings, go to Audio. Go to Digital Preamp and make sure it is off. If it is not, that could be creating an issue as well.

Thanks again bierfeldt. The problem is solved.

I know it has been a long time ( 30 odd years ) since I has separate components but I knew I couldn't be doing it that wrong. There were only 2 places to plug the Toslink into on the CXN and I was still getting nothing. So, on my way home from work I stopped off at Walmart and bought the only Toslink cable they had in stock ( GE branded and 12 freakin feet long!! ) for $25 , plugged it in and Voila! music from CD's.
I guess I was doing everything right all along and just had a defective cable.
I was able to get to the setting I needed from the unit itself and the remote ( just didn't know I could go straight to that setting from that button ).
NeedleDoctor are sending me a replacement cable and a shipping label to send the defective one back to them but the cheapie Walmart one will get me by until then.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

That has to be maddening to have a defective cable. Glad to hear you figured it out
