From the August 2001 issue, we have Michael Fremer's illuminating review of the Audio Physic Avanti III loudspeaker. Fremer wonders how Audio Physic can top the outstanding price/performance success of its middle-of-the line Virgo model with a speaker that costs twice as much. As Fremer asks, "Is the Avanti twice as good as the Virgo? More than twice as good? Or is it just another competent but undistinguished design?"

While, in theory, a tonearm should not contribute any "sound" of its own, John Atkinson explains how just the opposite can be the case in his review of the Linn Ekos tonearm. And with a variety of great tonearms on the market, JA tells us why the Linn is in his system (circa 1989). Additional comments from Alvin Gold and Martin Colloms are included.

Next, Jonathan Scull offers more audiophile tweaks in "Fine Tunes #37." J-10 reports the details about Conductive Silver Grease, and discusses cheap CD transport tweaks from AudioPrism, Auric, YBA, and a faithful and resourceful reader.

Finally, we have the next installment in our "Recording of the Month" series for the online archives: Recording of January 2001: Geminiani: Concerti Grossi conducted by Andrew Manze, Academy of Ancient Music, and featuring Alison McGillivray on cello and Richard Egarr playing harpsichord.
