I suggest that you spend $199 and get the Audioengine A2 powered speakers; I have them connected to my computer and they sound great.

I would not suggest the Lepai amplifier. It is not adequate for most speakers.

If $200 is more than your budget, the Cerwin-Vega XD3 powered speakers are $100, and not too bad.

I use an inexpensive subwoofer, which is adequate since the volume is never very loud.

You could probably find a 10" sub cheap on the used market, since a lot of people trade up to a more powerful one for their main audio system.

i enthusiastically endorse the A2 suggestion. if you sit close to them the bass is so sharp and accurate you will need no sub.

i have the A2s right in front of me as i work and i *enjoy* listening to music on them despite the fact i own systems way more expensive. the A2s are *not* outclassed as long as i sit 2ft from them (which is what computer speakers are about). make sure you use the AE "stands" or some contraption that points them up a little.

the A2s are a little marvel and one of the best bargains out there. they present stuff in an amazingly capable way.

i love high end audio. i love expensive wine. but just as i enjoy a great wine bargain (i am drinking a glass of new zealand pinot noir as i write this) i also enjoy "entry (price) level" audio stuff that allows me to listen to music in more places, thoroughly enjoying it.

the A2s open the concept of stage, dynamics and musicality at an unreal price considering their performance as close-up monitors.

PS: i do not work in the audio world, i am just a hobbyist.

Thanks for all the input! I'm going to look up the A2s and see how much I can get them for, hopefully its with in my budget, I am currently a student and have all my money going towards tuitions and such so I don't have a lot of money to blow xD.

get the A2 classic used on Ebay, not the newer model. save some $ and get it from someone compelled to "upgrade". we have all been students before, bro.

Okay a2s are like $300 new in Canada (yikes), so I can either get them used like adviced, or get the micca m42x (im seeing alot of good stuff for these speakers) for $80 and a good 2x50w muse m50 amp for $50, then in the future I could grab a good DAC and add a active powered subwoofer by High level in/out once I have some more cash. I'm having trouble deciding which route to go.
