2009 Album Sales Stats

I found these figures interesting, from the July/August issue of Tape Op magazine:

In 2009, 98,000 albums were released in the US, selling a total of 373.9 million copies.

Only 2.1% of those albums sold >5000 copies, but accounted for 91% of the total sales.

97.9% of albums released in 2009 sold <5000 and most of those must have sold <1000.

It makes you wonder why so many want to be in the music business?
So, what ever market those 2%ers are winning, if you want to make it you need to be like them?

WOW!

I guess quitting a day job is REALLY OUT OF THE QUESTION.

I can hear them in the back room now..."Harvey, cut that production down to an initial run of 500"!

Or maybe they are really good artists, but most consumers really like "crap" the best?

Maybe HiRez crap won't sell either. Time to order that Mulit-tray disc burner and run'm 5 at a time.

I doubt this is different from any other year. The difference now is the number these %s represent is so much larger. No way to hear everything, even in your preferred genre.
