You (or the site manager) should put this post in an appropriate forum as this the the bin to catch spammers.

If he's seriously into this stuff, he's going to want to choose the speakers. There are far too many considerations that only he would be thinking of when choosing stuff that you would have no way of knowing if he didn't tell you. And then there's the issue of it mating well to begin with.

Maybe surprise him with a shopping spree at the local hi-fi joint and let him pick his poison?

I can't do that........It's hard to tell.

What speaker can you suggest?

There are just too many unknowns that only he could answer to even begin suggesting something he'd like. Think of it like this, let's say that you just asked the same sort of question wanting a suggestion for a good car for your wife, without us knowing what sort of things she needs from a car. I might say, for example, the Mazda Miata is a blast...go buy one. And then you would say something to the effect that she needs a car big enough for 5 kids and a dog. Oops, that would have been good to know before I suggested the Miata. I might say, well, the Dodge Caravan is great for hauling around a bunch of kids...go buy one. You might say something to the effect that she had a minivan two kids ago and hated it because it just didn't ride good and it was underpowred. Gotcha, the Chevy Tahoe is the perfect vehicle for her. No, the gas mileage sux and that's a big deal to her...

I'm not being snarky or anything, it's just not nearly enough information to go on without knowing what he needs and wants.

We'll that's true let me try and give you some info on for you to help me =)

-Between 200$-2000&
- he doesn't like the towers
- He really likes bookshelf speakers , and that's what he's most into
- He like the ones from PSB
- He wants them for his Bluesound Powernode
- I can only buy them either in crutchfield or amazon, so they have to be a little more inclined from the industrial side.

I want to buy him some speakers that are off his budget (400$) some speakers that will kind of amaze him, something that he never thought of buying, simply because he couldn't, you know?

Not a thing wrong with going the PSB route. Great speakers that can be enjoyed for a very long time. He would probably appreciate Dynaudio speakers. They do what PSB does on a different level of refinement and quality. They know speakers and used to supply their drivers to other big name speaker companies. There wouldn't be any compatibility problems to worry about. They're also serious players in the audio engineering game and are used by the recording guys quite a bit. The DM series would probably be the best bang for your buck while still having something special that he could be proud of.

Their passive speakers (except for the Excite series, but then I don't consider those to be "real" Dynas) are a PITA to drive!

P.S. I had three pairs, so been there, done that...

But, I've not found that to be the case. They aren't very sensitive, but their impedence correcting crossover keeps them very amp friendly. He has 80 watts to play around with and designed for 4 ohm speakers so that shouldn't be a problem. My take on the Dynaudio monitors that I've used is that they simply maintain their composure so well at high output levels that you can play them so damn loud and they just keep sounding better.

I had a pair of Contour 3.0, a pair of Contour 3.3 and apair of Confidence 5.
Not only did I have to feed them from a decent 300Wpc SS amp but they would not "open up" until pushed quite hard, so forget about late night listening sessions. Yes you can get sound out of them with 80Wpc but if you also want music... well, no can do!

I've used the 50s and the 52se, which are probably a bit more along the lines of the DM series. I still have the 52se models and use them every now and then with anywhere from 16 tube watts to 120 SS watts and they work very well with both.

I'm not questioning your evaluation of the speakers you used and don't even doubt that those models may indeed be difficult to drive, but Dynaudio gives some pretty good data and performance expectations with their various models and the DM series should present no issues in this situation...absent some sort of unknown intended use by the guys kiddo.
