I actually have a laser infrared thermometer that I use to measure amplifier heatsink temperatures, etc. I am not sure if the target area is small enough to examine individual IC temperatures, but I will try the idea out.

For the same economy, a std. (non-IR, physical-contact) probe style unit is still more accurate. But that may cause grounding and electrostatic issues.
If a lab has deep pockets, investment in FLIR equipment may also be worthwhile....

FLIR's patent "license" for the underlying technology expired at the start of the year, allowing competitors to offer very-low-cost alternatives.
A popular (and, gauging from reviews, effective) option is the $200 Seek Thermal camera.
I think it's avail for both Apple and Android.

... OKAY, Stereophile ... that's a Budget Accessory Product of the Year (in my book!!)
...and JA would have a new weapon against the so-called objectivists:
As having studied Electrical Engineering myself, I applaud the technical and also simply "fun" merits of thermal imaging of electrical components.
Also, just validating this type of analysis is spot-on performed in the "real world" and is not uncommon at all. The iPhone gadget is especially appealing as it shows the actual thermal zones and potential damaging "hot spots". If $200 is in the budget and you already have an iPhone, I would recommend that device.
If you already own a gun-type device, use it, but if you are looking to buy, the iGadget is superior.
