Sanus are OK and price is sane (hence the name, maybe?)

Height guidance is to put them where the tweeters are the height of your head/ears when listening.  So depends on height of your chair, of you, and your habits of sitting vs standing/moving/dancing when listening.

Speaking of Sanus, I have a pair of their basic wood ones in 28" height.  I don't use them and would love to give them away.  If you ever happen to be in the DC area they're yours.

Stands, to do their job of coupling the speakers effectively to the floor, need to be relatively rigid and massive. This is essential. A 36-inch stand is usually about right for seated listening.

That is the reason that they tend to be expensive. Every wood stand I have ever seen is very poor.

Reviewers almost always buy stands that have a hollow vertical column made of steel that can be filled with lead or steel bird-shot (available on-line in bags or at sporting goods stores) to provide adequate mass. The Sanus STEEL FOUNDATIONS stands are similar to this and are not bad when filled. Audio Advisor has them for $100 or so.

One alternative is to go to a metal-fabrication shop and have them made from a 3-inch tube with metal plates welded to top and bottom, and add floor spikes.

My favorite solution is to stack concrete blocks that are 6 x 8 x 8 and cover them with an attractive fabric drapery which completely hides them. This is probably the best stand you can get acoustically. Stacking five or 6 blocks gives you the required height of 30 or 36 inches.

This is massive, very cheap, and can look very nice, depending on what you cover them with. A nice king pillow-case can work very well, or the artistically inclined can decorate the fabric to complement the decor.

Wow, thanks to both of you!

This is fun, but driving my wife completely nuts.

I bagged the CM5's and put down a deposit for Salk Song Towers. Problem solved! :)

Tower speakers are far better than screwing with stands IMO.

Wise decision!
