The 706V is a very good-sounding speaker IMO.

Please clarify the following phrase for me, because I am confused by it: "to qualify the Chorus 706V from the laptop first".

I don't understand the "qualify....from..." meaning.

Meaning I was hoping to get opinions from the web before driving the 100 miles to hear them.

You didn't mention what amplifier you intend to drive them with.

If you are going to drive 100 miles, I suggest that you take your amplifier with you and listen to them with your amplifier.

The synergy between speakers and amplifier is not to be overlooked.

I have heard nothing but good things about the 706V speakers, but they could sound quite different with another amplifier, and everything is different in a store anyway.

What I would do is order them from Music Direct. They give you 30 days to return them if you don't like them (unlikely IMO),

There really is no substitute for hearing them not only with your amplifier but in your own acoustical situation, so that is the ideal way to audition. I won't buy anything anymore without hearing it at home for a week or so.

The downside of having to ship something back is nothing compared to ending up with the wrong thing and being stuck with it.

I see you are from Oregon; I am a Portland native from years ago.

You likely know Stereotypes Audio then. We went there Sat, and spent way too long listening and learning. Was a very beneficial experience in several ways. For one I've known my ears aren't what they were due to my shooting days long ago, but it was still plain as day to hear differences in sound from a ~$1500 Cambridge amp to a ~$2200 Moon(maybe?) amp. I honestly didn't think I'd tell the difference. Great people, nice little store, wonderful equipment. I'll be back. :)

I also have a considerable hearing loss above 5 Khz, but it does not affect my ability to hear music quite nicely.

It is useful to look at the actual ranges of various instruments and the human voice.

The fact is that there is very little above 4 Khz that is all that critical.

I think that if you applied a 5Khz lowpass filter to a stereo system, very few listeners would notice the difference.

Brushed cymbals and a couple of other things are higher, but I listen to a very wide variety of classical, jazz, and other types of music, and have only had one or two occasions to observe that a certain musical part was not as prominent for me as it once was.(mainly extreme high violin notes).

The ear is quite sensitive to rather small amounts of distortion. My mother has rather poor hearing, but she was very sensitive to the differences in sound quality when I demonstrated two different speakers to her in her stereo.

She liked the Epos speakers much better than the Boston speakers.
