And your budget is?
What is your listening room like?
What are your musical preferences?
If I was on a tight budget and wanted to set up a system, the first thing I would buy is a Harman-Kardon 3490 stereo receiver.
You can get it for under $400, and it sounds great. It even includes a phono preamp and tuner and has subwoofer output jacks.
To get an integrated amplifier that sounds significantly better you would have to spend at least twice as much money IMO.
A pair of Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 speakers is $349 at Music Direct, and you will be hard-pressed to find anything better-sounding without going over $500.
I'm looking to spend somwhere between $300-500 on a receiver. I've got klipsch speakers already but it's a surround sound system so I really don't want to use that. I was looking at the wharfdale speakers the poster below mentioned. I've already got phones, Grado SR80i.
My listening room is just my living room. Laminate flooring. Minimal furniture. Plaster walls I believe. I don't know the exact size but its large.
As for musical preferences, I listen to a very wide variety of music. Most of my vinyl collection is comprised of classical, jazz, a little electronic, dub, and rock (indie, classic, modern like Queens of the Stone Age, and some alternative)
