In the 'Interview with a Legend' series RØDE Microphones' founder and director Peter Freedman hosts an intimate discussion with icons from all areas of the audio industry including Engineers, Producers, Musicians, Artists and Entrepreneurs.

Tony Faulkner is one of the most prolific and respected sound engineers in the classical music field. Seen as a rebel by some and a pioneer by others, there is no doubt that Tony's passion for recording live performance has led him to introduce recording techniques that are used the world over across all musical genres.

P.S: Stephen, can one embed YouTube/etc. into forum posts/blog comments somehow?

In that 2011 video, TF makes quite a few interesting comments, including:

TF preferring the sound of the Studer A80 (at 15ips) OVER the sound of high-rez PCM, DSD and (drum roll please) the LIVE feed (!!!). The Studer analog deck is obviously doing something to the sound to please TF's ear/brain system. Actually, something similar is reported when, e.g., feeding a high-end CD player (with its own volume control) to an amp vs. the same CD player --> preamp--> amp. Sometimes the extra-layer "buffer" helps sonics.

TF's ultimate sonic champ is the A80, first generation tape (which is totally impractical for end consumer, of course).

TF admits that earlier (pre Sigma-Delta??) A/D converters (e.g., Sony 16xx) had a bit more sonic "energy". I wonder whether this is related to single-bit (Sigma-Delta) vs multi-bit debate in consumer D/A's?
