I'll also take recommendations of albums to avoid, if you've come across any recordings that were particularly bad or just mediocre.

Thanks!

Hi Newbie

It's not modern recordings that aren't very good but rather the mastering of these recordings that is doing the damage. There are plenty of very nice sounding modern recordings just not very many good mastering jobs especially when it comes popular music releases.

As for some recommendations of good hi-rez downloads. I second that the recommendation for the first Crosby, Stills and Nash album. The 24/96 release available on HDTracks is spectacular. I would also get both Grateful Dead releases "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead" and the Paul McCartney's "McCartney", "McCartney II","Ram" and "Band on the Run" - all of these sound very good.

Dark Eyed Cajun Woman from The Doobie Brothers Captain and Me 192 kHz HDtracks.com sounds pretty good. Also Elton John Madman Across the Water from the same place.
